Mining Bitcoin is getting harder – 220 Exahash still going strong

Since September, Bitcoin’s mining difficulty has gone from 30.97 trillion hashes to 32.05 trillion hashes, hitting an all-time high at block height 753,984. After two difficulty increases in the past month, the network’s mining difficulty rose again by 3.45% on September 13.

Bitcoin difficulty hits 32 trillion

Bitcoin (BTC), the leading cryptocurrency by market cap, is now harder to mine. In fact, on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, the network difficulty hit an all-time high of 32.05 trillion. About two weeks or 2,016 blocks ago, the difficulty increased by 9.26%, the second largest increase in 2022.

Bitcoin mining difficulty has never been harder as miners now need to calculate over 32 trillion hashes to find a new BTC block.

2,016 blocks two weeks before the last change, a slight increase of 0.63% in difficulty. With today’s increase, at block height 753,984, finding Bitcoin (BTC) block rewards has never been more difficult. Additionally, BTC’s dollar value fell by more than 9% on Tuesday afternoon (ET) following the recent release of the U.S. CPI report, adding to the worrisome outlook for Bitcoin.

On September 13, 2022, at block height 753,984, Bitcoin’s difficulty reached an all-time high.

Despite the drop in price and the recent rise in difficulty, BTC’s hash rate remains above the 200 exahash per second (EH/s) range, and at the time of writing it is running at 227.07 EH/s. Foundry USA has been the network’s top mining pool for the past 24 hours, with 26.85% of the world’s hashrate.

Foundry is followed by F2pool with 15.4% of the BTC hashrate, and Binance Pool with 14.77% of the global hashrate. Binance Pool is followed by Antpool (13.42%) and Viabtc (10.74%). Foundry USA discovered 40 of the 149 blocks mined in the last 24 hours, while F2pool captured 23.

Currently, the BTC block time is 9:17 minutes per block, and 2,011 blocks remain to be mined until the next difficulty change expected on September 27, 2022. At the current block interval speed and hash rate achieved today, it is possible to see a negative 3.7 % reduction.
